Description
The Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek', often called the Green Velvet Alocasia, is a stunning tropical perennial native to the Philippines. It is highly prized by collectors for its dramatic, contrasting foliage.
Description
The Alocasia Frydek features large, arrowhead-shaped leaves with a distinct velvety texture. The foliage is a deep, rich emerald green that provides a sharp contrast to the brilliant white or silvery-white lateral veins. The stems (petioles) are typically a pale green, sometimes with subtle mottling. While it can produce small, greenish-white spathe-and-spadix flowers, they are often secondary to the plant's ornamental leaves. It can grow up to 2–3 feet tall indoors under the right conditions.
Quick Care Guide: Green Velvet Alocasia
- ☀️ Light: Bright, Indirect Light This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct Florida afternoon sun, which will quickly scorch and fade the velvety texture of the leaves.
- 💧 Water: Consistent Moisture Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but ensure it never stays soggy. Allow only the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
- 🌴 Humidity: High Humidity is Essential The Green Velvet thrives in high humidity. It is a perfect match for a humid indoor space or a well-lit bathroom to keep the foliage lush and prevent leaf-tip browning.
- 🐾 Toxicity: Keep Away from Pets Like all Alocasias, this plant is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It is best displayed on a high shelf or in a hanging planter out of reach.
- 🪴 Soil & Feeding Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix. During the growing season, a balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks will support its large, dramatic leaves.
