Frydek Alocasia (Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek')

Commonly known as the Green Velvet Alocasia, the Frydek is a crown jewel for any serious collector. Its deep, emerald-green leaves have a luxurious matte texture that feels like actual velvet, contrasted sharply by bright white lateral veins that seem to glow against the dark foliage. While it has a reputation for being a bit of a "drama queen," its architectural beauty and striking presence make it the ultimate centerpiece for a well-curated Microtopia display.

TWO FORMS, ONE PLANT

This listing covers both. The regular (non-variegated) Frydek is the classic — solid emerald velvet with white veins. The variegated Frydek carries irregular cream-to-white sectors across the leaf, and no two plants are marked the same way. Variegated plants grow noticeably slower, scorch more easily (pale tissue has no chlorophyll to protect it), and can revert to solid green if light is too low. Give a variegated one the brightest indirect light you have, and be patient with it. Variegated stock is limited and priced individually — ask us what is on the bench.

Quick Care Guide: Frydek Alocasia

☀️ Light: Bright Indirect Sun. The Frydek is very sensitive to light. It needs plenty of bright, filtered light to hold its deep color and velvety texture. Absolutely avoid direct Florida sun, which will scorch and bleach the leaves in short order. A few feet back from a bright window is the sweet spot.

💧 Water: The Goldilocks approach. This plant likes to stay consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. It is prone to root rot if left in standing water, but it will also drop leaves if it stays bone-dry too long. Filtered water or rainwater helps prevent the brown leaf tips common with tap water.

🌴 Humidity: High to very high. The Frydek truly thrives in the heavy, natural humidity of Wesley Chapel. It prefers levels above 60%. If the air gets too dry the leaves may crisp at the edges or attract spider mites. Grouping it with your other Alocasias or running a humidifier keeps it lush.

🐾 Toxicity: Toxic to pets. Like all Alocasias, the Frydek contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested, causing intense oral irritation and swelling. Best displayed on a high plant stand or a sturdy shelf, out of reach of curious furry friends.

🌱 Propagation: Corm hunting. True to the Microtopia spirit of self-sufficiency, the Frydek propagates through underground corms. During spring repotting you can hunt for these small bulb-like structures in the soil. Separated and placed in a humid prop box with moss, they grow into brand-new 2" or 4" nursery starts.
