The Hydnophytum papuanum, commonly known as the Ant Plant or Maze Plant, is a fascinating epiphytic caudiciform native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea. It is a "myrmecophyte," meaning it has a specialized symbiotic relationship with ants in its natural habitat.

The most distinctive feature of this plant is its caudex—a large, woody, swollen base. In the wild, this caudex develops a complex internal labyrinth of smooth-walled tunnels and chambers designed to house ant colonies. While the ants provide the plant with nutrients and defense, the plant provides a secure home. When grown indoors, the plant maintains this architectural form but does not require or attract ants. Above the sculptural base, it grows thin, succulent-like stems with small, glossy, oval-shaped green leaves. It occasionally produces tiny, inconspicuous white flowers followed by small orange or red berries.
