Description

The Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri, commonly known as the Donkey Ear Plant, is a fast-growing succulent native to Madagascar. It is prized for its unique foliage and its ability to produce miniature "baby" plants along the tips of its leaves.

The Donkey Ear Plant features large, fleshy, lance-shaped leaves that can grow up to 20 inches long. The leaves are typically a silvery-green or bronze-green color, covered in a waxy, powdery coating (bloom) and distinct maroon-to-brown splotches. One of its most striking features is the production of plantlets, or "bulbils," at the leaf tips. Over time, the weight of these plantlets can cause the leaves to arch downward toward the soil, where the babies take root. In the fall or winter, mature plants may produce tall stalks (up to 3 feet) with clusters of drooping, bell-shaped flowers in shades of yellow, red, or violet.
